The Rock

NA02120_.WMF (34994 bytes)Rocks are made up of minerals. There are many different kinds of rocks. There are igneous rocks that were formed from materials so hot that they were liquid in the earth before cooling and hardening. There are sedimentary rocks formed from sand, mud, or clay that was deposited in water. Coal is a sedimentary rock. There are also metamorphic rocks or rocks that have been changed by great pressures and temperatures. All the rocks you can ever find belong to one of these three main groups.

In Deuteronomy 32 Moses wrote a song of praise to God. In it he said: I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are jNA01825_.WMF (8146 bytes)udgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. In the New Testament Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 10:4 that Rock is Christ.

A rock is solid and dependable and strong. A mountain or cliff made of rock is able to hold us up. Christ Jesus the Lord is the Rock of our salvation. Because He paid the price of our sins He is able to save and keep and satisfy our souls. We can rest our hope or expectation of heaven and eternal life upon Him. He is able to save.

Npoth001.wmf (8070 bytes)The Lord Jesus told a story in Matthew chapter seven of two menBone who was wise and the other who was foolish. Both built houses. The houses were the same. One man, the wise man, built on solid rock, the foolish man built on sand. When the storm came with winds and rain the house on the sand collapsed, but the house on the rock stood fast.

We are all growing up, learning about living, building lives. We must build on something. We must build on Truth. We must build on the Lord. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6). We must build our lives on the Lord and on His Word. We must trust in Him. He must be the foundation or support for our lives and then, no matter what happens on earth, our lives will be strong like rock.

1 Peter 2:5 says that God has laid a foundation or cornerstone and whoever believes on Him will not be disappointed, confounded, or put to shame. David said, The Lord is my light and my salvation. The Lord is the strength (rock) of my life. Is He yours?

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' Name.
On Christ the solid Rock I stand--
All other ground is sinking sand.
