The Bristlecone Pine Tree

Before the founding of Rome, before the golden age of Athens, and about the same time as the pyramids were built, a seed began to grow on a mountain in what is now California. The tree that grew from that seed is still alive, the world's oldest living thing (at least as far as we know so far)! It is called Methuselah, after the oldest man in the Bible. It is a 4,600 year old bristlecone pine tree growing 9,000 feet up in the White Mountains of California.

Scientists estimate that a bristlecone may live for 5,000 years, so Methuselah may be around for another 400 years

God promises that the person who trusts in the Lord, whose hope and expectation is in the Lord God, shall never see death. "For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters that spreads out her roots by the river..." Jeremiah 17:7-8

God's children, those who belong to Him by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, have everlasting life. Oh, they might leave earth for heaven, but they themselves will never die because the roots of their trust are in the eternal God. God has eternal life. God cannot die or cease to exist. God is pleased to give His life to as many as will receive His Son as Lord and Saviour.

But let us be warned. God says the man is cursed who trusts in man. Cursed is the man who trusts in himself. For "the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; Who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). Our hearts are incurably sick.

It matters where we sink our roots. It matters whom we trust.

"And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. These things I have written to you who believe in the Name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the Name of the Son of God" (1 John 5:11-13).

Jesus said, "Verily, verily I say unto you, He that hears My Word, and believes on Him that sent Me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but is passed from death unto life." (John 5:24).

"This is life eternal, that they might know... the only true God and Jesus Christ Whom You have sent" (John 17:3).

Ten years, 40 years, 70 years, 80 years, 5000 years? How long will you live? Those who are saved live forever.
